Per NFPA 110: “Fuel tanks shall be close enough to the prime mover for the fuel lift (suction head) of the prime mover fuel pump to meet the fuel system requirements, or a fuel transfer pump and day tank shall be provided.”

Locating a leak in secondary containment piping is difficult to do in below-ground piping systems, where leaks are collected in a low-point sump. For existing sites, contact your local DEP Division for a referral to an organization that can perform leak location services. For new designs, you may consider a continuous leak monitoring system to pinpoint the exact location of a leak, should it ever develop.

You should consider a Fuel Port with a built-in fuel transfer pump. The Simplex SmartPump is designed to transfer fuel from a fuel delivery truck to one or more remote storage tanks. This On-Site Power Advisor article may be helpful.

You can rely on Simplex to select the pump and motor combination to meet the required flow rate for your project. To do so, Simplex will need the flow rate (GPM or GPH), the specified total dynamic head (TDH) for the fuel piping, and the preferred system voltage. But if you would like to do some of your own calculations, this Pump Selector is very useful. When providing the input variables, try using the following:

Construction: Cast Iron
Sealing Options: Mechanical Seal
Viscosity: 50SSU
Differential Pressure: as needed
Temperature: 80F
Specific Gravity: 0.85
Flow Rate: as needed

When you are presented with pump selections, look for “SG Series” pumps. Also good to know: the 1800 rpm pumps (with 1800rpm motors) are less expensive. The slower-speed 1200rpm pumps are quieter but require more expensive motors.

Multiple leaks in an above-ground fuel piping system (especially those that repeat after unions are re-tightened), are often caused by thermal expansion, and the resulting pressure buildup in the piping system.

We recommend that a fuel filtration cycle be set up to circulate 25% of the fuel tank’s content every week. This schedule would allow some time for suspended contaminants and water to settle to the bottom of the tank, where they can get picked up by subsequent filtration events. Also important, a fuel maintenance system should be selected with a fuel circulation pump of sufficient flow capacity to complete a cycle within an 8-hour period. This would allow for a filtration event to be supervised from start to finish by an employee within a single work shift.

The design engineer for the overall piping system can provide this information since the pump’s outlet pressure is determined by the site piping, not the pump itself. A pump will develop whatever pressure is required to overcome the static and dynamic head of the piping system. Unless otherwise directed, our standard practice is to size the motor so that the pump can deliver a minimum of 50 PSI, without the motor being overloaded. If the design engineer requires a higher pressure, the motor size may need to increase.

The maximum vertical lift capacity of a positive-displacement pump is approximately 15′-18′. The pump should not exceed 15″Hg of vacuum.

If an engine-mounted pump is unable to draw fuel from a day tank, it is most likely because of:
1. The day tank location and the associated piping layout require suction that is beyond the capacity of the engine-mounted fuel pump (the engine data sheet will show the max suction head for the pump, and also the max discharge pressure for the return side of the pump – these are not very strong pumps). You can relieve excessive restriction by minimizing or eliminating piping elements that are not absolutely necessary (foot valves inside the day tank suction line, excess elbows, etc.).
2. Air is getting into the fuel line and keeping the pump from creating suction. A sight glass in the piping may help determine if air is coming into the line. Tighten all connections that may be allowing air intrusion.
3. The engine’s inline fuel filters (if any) are clogged and not allowing flow to the engine.
4. The engine-mounted pump is in need of service or replacement. You can add a vacuum gauge on the piping between the engine and day tank to measure the pump’s performance.

Exhaust Systems

Consider using a Disk-style silencer with flush-mounted flanges, and shorter expansion bellows instead of the typical flexible connectors. If still unable to clear the ceiling height, call us to discuss a custom design.

No, exhaust silencer attenuation grades (critical, residential, etc) are not regulated by any industry standard. This means that a given manufacturer’s “critical grade” silencer may perform differently from an equally-labeled product from a competing manufacturer. Whenever possible, it is best to specify sound attenuation requirements in terms than can be measured (i.e. silencer shall provide 25dBA overall noise reduction).

Flexible connectors consist of a 321 stainless steel hose terminated with couplings or flanges. They are generally between 18″-24″ long, and designed to absorb vibration between the engine exhaust manifold and the engine silencer. Steel expansion bellows feature a single-ply or multiple-ply corrugated 304 or 321 stainless steel construction, and are specifically designed to absorb axial movement. While flexible connectors allow 0.25″ axial deflection per 12″ length, an expansion bellows often provides 1.5″-3″ deflection in a 12″ length. We recommend the installation of flexible connectors at the engine outlet connection. Expansion bellows should be installed in piping downstream of the silencer, where the piping changes direction.

Ventilated thimbles are mandated by NFPA-37 where exhaust piping penetrates through combustible walls or combustible roofs.  Even in seemingly “non-combustible” walls/roofs, it may be a good idea to provide an insulated thimble to protect against burning of roof sealers, coatings, stucco, etc.  Wall and roof thimbles are available in carbon steel or stainless steel.

Electrical Systems

Yes, our Surge Suppression Protection (SSP) option provides a 40kA-rated SPD, pre-installed in the ATS enclosure. Other ratings can be specified to meet your requirements.

The spacing between adjoining remote radiators should equal 1.5-times the radiator’s fan diameter.  For example, two radiators with 6′ diameter fans should be installed with 9′ spacing between them. The purpose of this spacing is to avoid hot air re-circulation, which would result in decreased cooling performance.
